“…Quantitation of the precipitate with protein color reactions, cryocrit, or absorbance at 2141280 nm without taking into consideration the amount of albumin or serum globulin contamination overestimates the protein content of the precipitate [19], leading to false positive results. Extensive wash steps, up to 10-20 times [20], have been used to decrease this contamination. Of course, this not only complicates the analysis, but can also cause substantial loss of CG [4, 191. In order to avoid these problems, we used a different approach.…”

“…We have previously reported a high incidence of cryoglobulins in glomerulonephritis (1) and demonstrated that the IgG component of the cryoglobulin lacked sialic acid (2, 3) which may render the immunoglobulin autoimmunogenic and lead to the production of an autologous immune complex disease, the complex consisting of immunoglobulins of different classes. Neuraminidase is found in bacterial and viral organisms and chemical alteration of immunoglobulins by the removal of sialic acid from the molecule induced by this enzyme may ultimately lead to immune deposit disease and glomerulonephritis.…”

“…The antiglobulin activity resides in the IgM or IgA component except in the rare IgG-IgG cryoglobulin where a 7S IgG antiglobulin interacts with its IgG antigen(Meltzer et al 1966, Cerottini & Grey 1969.Mixed cryoglobulins have been shown to be capable of inducing inflammatory reactions. Thus, when human mixed cryoglobulins are injected into guinea-pig skin, erythema and himorrhage occur, and their intravenous infusion results in a glomerulitis(McIntosh et al 1972).…”
