Modification of gamma radiation induced response of peritoneal macrophages and splenocytes byHippophae rhamnoides(RH-3) in mice

Abstract: Alcoholic extract of Hippophae rhamnoides, RH-3, reported to render >80% survival against lethal whole body Co-60-gamma irradiation (10 Gy) in mice, was investigated for its immunostimulatory effects. In comparison with un-irradiated control, whole body irradiation did not reduce peritoneal macrophage counts at 24 h post-irradiation. RH-3 treatment (30 mg kg(-1) body weight) alone or 30 min before whole-body irradiation enhanced viable counts of macrophages significantly (P< or =0.05) compared with both un-irr… Show more

“…There was a small but reproducible amount of LTE 4 , suggesting that a small number of cells in the peritoneal cavity of WT animals survived irradiation and remained able to generate cysLTs. It has been reported that macrophages and mast cells are relatively radioresistant (30,31). Compared to the robust restoration of LT synthesis in the chimeric animals described above, these experiments with 5LO Ϫ/Ϫ bone marrow provide solid support for the hypothesis that the overwhelming majority of LTA 4 generated during zymosan-induced peritonitis in the mouse is derived from bone marrow hematopoietic cells.…”

“…These experiments examined the levels of various biomarkers of oxidative stress, including superoxide anion, lipid peroxidation, and protein oxidation. Interestingly, RH-3 was found to have immunostimulatory properties, which may play an important role in its radioprotective efficacy (Prakash et al, 2005 ).…”

“…To improve the digestibility of food and food intake, natural food additives are commonly used for raising animals (Fang et al, 2008). Studies have shown that plant extracts can improve food intake and food digestibility in ruminants (Prakash et al, 2010;Velagapudi et al, 2010). The leaf and fruit of sea-buckthorn can improve the average daily gain and feed conversion in monogastric animals (Zhao et al, 2012).…”
