Polymers with advanced properties can be achieved among other measures by reinforcing with fibrous materials, by polymer blending and surface modification. Using the surface treatment of PP-EPDM injection moulding specimens (washing, flaming, plasma-treatment) an overview on progress in surface analytics is given. It is shown that XPS, contact angle and zeta-potential measurements give corresponding results concerning the composition of the surface region. Additional to the kind of interaction forces at interfaces the mechanical properties of reinforced polymers are governed by sorption layers and electrical phenomena at interfaces. Corresponding results were obtained at chalk filled PE-HD and glass fibre reinforced polyamide. INTRODUKTIONAdvanced polymeric materials can be obtained, e.g., by reinforcement with fibres, polymer blending and surface modification of polymers with defined bulk properties. In all theses cases material properties are governed by interfacial parameters in which interaction forces at the interface as well as the morphology of the interfacial region are involved. Prerequisite for elucidation of the mostly empirically known interrelations between material properties and surface phenomena is the knowledge of interrelations between kind and size of interaction forces and the chemical and physical structure of the interfacial region. This is also necessary for technological processes governed by sorption, wetting and adhesion phenomena. In the following a review is given on recent developments in the field of surface forces characterization, and results of own work are reported dealing with surface parameters and mechanical properties of reinforced polymers. CHARACTERIZATION OF INTERACTION FORCES AT POLYMER SURFACES < 40Improved adhesion or improvement of certain mechanical properties of composites can be achieved by covalent chemical bonds, Coulomb forces or acid-base interactions between the components. In contrast to dispersion forces which act unspecifically between solids, the force components mentioned act due to specific interactions between suitable molecule groups of each partner at the interface. Therefore, the main goal in surface characterization of polymers consists in detecting functional groups at the surface and describing their ability to interact by forces mentioned above. When describing technologically relevant adhesion phenomena by physical methods and theoretical considerations the effect of auxiliaries, impurities and adsorbed water on adhesive strength is mostly neglected. In order to take into consideration these so-called "third substances" we have used the term "displacement forces"which expresses the ability of substances mentioned to decrease the adhesive strength by adsorption at the interface. Competition between adhesion and adsorption at the interface governed by the mass action law can be assumed.
