“…NMR analyses were recorded on a Varian Unity Inova spectrometer at a resonance frequency of 399.961 MHz for 1 H and 100.579 MHz for 13 C. Both homonuclear decoupling and correlation spectroscopy (COSY) were used for proton assignments. A 10-mm broadband probe was used for acquiring carbon spectra and carbon-hydrogen heteronuclear chemical-shift correlation (HETCOR) spectra; one-bond 1 JCOH was set to 140 Hz, and three-bond 3 JCOH was set to 7.5 Hz. Quantitative 13 C spectra were acquired with a 70°p ulse angle, a 3.5-s acquisition time, and a 15-s relaxation delay for 4096 scans.…”

“…Daly et al 1 reported the amination of polysulfone (PSf) by nitration with a milder nitrating agent, ammonium nitrate/trifluoroacetic anhydride, which avoided extensive degradation. Naik et al 2 and Conningham et al 3 reported nitration reduction for the amination of poly(ether ether sulfone)s and poly-(ether sulfone)s. Others reported the preparation of aminated and aromatic PSf copolymers from nitro-and amine-containing monomers, respectively.…”

“…22,23 Polysulfones with N-containing functional groups have also been prepared via lithiation. 24 -27 From among these, the aromatic amino derivative (PSU-NH 2 ) has the greatest significance, which is available by the nitration/reduction method 12 as well (nitration of PSU is accomplished by NH 4 NO 3 ϩ (CF 3 CO) 2 O). Aminomethylation of PSU has been effected via phthalimidomethylation with N-chloromethylphthalimide and a Lewis acid-type catalyst 4,11 or with N-hydroxymethylphthalimide and CCl 3 SO 3 H in CF 3 COOH 12 followed by hydrazinolysis.…”

“…Attachment points for electrophile reagents are provided by the bisphenol portion in polysulfone and the biphenyl moiety in polyarylsulfone. The ortho ether sites are especially activated by the oxygen atom, so the electrophilic substitutions sulfonation, 2 halomethylation, 9 nitration (amination), phthalimidomethylation (aminomethylation), 12 and bromination 15 occur in these positions. (In most instances, disubstitution also can occur.)…”
