Modification of cellulose fabrics with reactive polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes to improve their shape‐memory performance

Abstract: Reactive polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (R-POSS) containing multi-N-methylol is a functional and attractive staring monomer for new reinforcement materials. R-POSS has excellent potential as a nanosized core for starburst dendrimers and highly reactive multi-Nmethylol. R-POSS can be used for cellulose fabric finishing to improve its shape-memory performance. Factors affecting the crosslinking reaction of the cellulose with R-POSS were investigated. The physical properties and morphological structure of t… Show more

“…Research related to the fabrication of hybrid nanocomposites based on POSS and nanocellulose is not as extensive as it is for other nanofillers such as nanoclay. Most of the related studies have used reactive or functionalized POSS as a nanofiller to enhance the properties of nanocellulose [ 200 , 201 , 202 , 203 , 204 , 205 , 206 , 207 , 208 , 209 ]. Depending on the functionality of POSS, there is a possibility of grafting and cross-linking reactions with the nanocellulose matrix that can significantly change the behavior of the resulting nanocomposite.…”

“…Depending on the functionality of POSS, there is a possibility of grafting and cross-linking reactions with the nanocellulose matrix that can significantly change the behavior of the resulting nanocomposite. Reactive POSS nanoparticles have been used to make cellulose-based hybrid composites, including POSS with multi-N-methylol groups [ 200 , 206 , 207 , 208 , 209 , 210 ], octa-amino-propyl silsesquioxane (POSS–NH 2 ) [ 203 , 205 ], and POSS-modified cellulose acetate [ 201 ].…”

“…Since the rise of the last century, the anti-wrinkle nishing of cotton fabrics has gone through several stages, such as "easy care" nishing, "wash and wear" nishing and low formaldehyde nishing (Huang et al 2003). To achieve the environmental protection goal of formaldehyde-free nishing, in addition to the research on amino resins (Guo et al 2021) and polybasic carboxylic acids (Xiao et al 2018), people pay more attention to the research of elastic polymers (Xie et al 2010). The elastic nishing of cotton fabrics can also be regarded as anti-wrinkle nishing, and their goal is to eliminate or reduce the deformation of textiles under the action of external force.…”

“…Applying the sol-gel technique, novel properties can be imparted to the cotton-based material, such as crease resistance, [8][9][10][11] abrasion resistance, 12 water repellency, 13,14 flame retardency, [15][16][17] antimicrobial finishing, [18][19][20] drug delivery systems, 21,22 UV protection, 23,24 selfcleaning properties 25,26 and wound healing. 27,28 In a previous study, a cotton material was functionalized by means of the alkoxysilanes TEOS, GPTMS, and TESP-SA, in combination with the polymers poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinylpyrrolidon) (PVP), resulting in improved physico-mechanical properties.…”
