Modifiable risk factors for 9-year mortality in older English and Brazilian adults: The ELSA and SIGa-Bagé ageing cohorts

Abstract: To quantify and compare 9-year all-cause mortality risk attributable to modifiable risk factors among older English and Brazilian adults. We used data for participants aged 60 years and older from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and the Bagé Cohort Study of Ageing (SIGa-Bagé). The five modifiable risk factors assessed at baseline were smoking, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and physical inactivity. Deaths were identified through linkage to mortality registers. For each risk factor, estimated a… Show more

“…The SABE and COMO VAI? studies showed a prevalence of physical inactivity of 85.4% 16 and 82% 17 , respectively, values higher than the observed in EpiFloripa Idosos (56.3%) 18 , SIGa-Bagé (41.4%) 19 , Bambuí (47.7%) 20 , and the ELSI-Brasil (33%) 21 . In addition to the territorial, social, and cultural differences among the cities, the instruments to measure physical activity were also diverse.…”

“…Sedentary behaviour is associated with the early onset of noncommunicable chronic diseases that lead to health problems and to all-cause mortality, regardless of other risk factors. Although PI progresses to the second risk factor of overall mortality – in 2006 it was the 7th ( 40 ) – it should be noted that it is the most easily modifiable health factor in all age groups. As a “silent killer”, its effects may go undetected for years or decades before a preventable disease develops from it.…”
