Modern technology calls for a modern approach to classification of epileptic seizures and the epilepsies

Abstract: SUMMARYIn the last 10-15 years the ILAE Commission on Classification and Terminology has been presenting proposals to modernize the current ILAE Classification of Epileptic Seizures and Epilepsies. These proposals were discussed extensively in a series of articles published recently in Epilepsia and Epilepsy Currents. There is almost universal consensus that the availability of new diagnostic techniques as also of a modern understanding of epilepsy calls for a complete revision of the Classification of Epilept… Show more

“…However, there are three major topics that also emerge in this study. First, for many authors this new classification scheme is not the thorough revision that was hoped for (Panayiotopoulos, 2011;L€ uders et al, 2012;Panayiotopoulos, 2012). “…Most appreciated the attempt of the ILAE to update the classification of seizures and epilepsies consistent with the current level of knowledge (Beghi, 2011;Mosh e, 2011;L€ uders et al, 2012). However, many negative comments, remarks, and tips for improvement have been published as well (Shinnar, 2010;Beghi, 2011;Devinsky & Najjar, 2011;G omez-Alonso & BellasLamas, 2011;Panayiotopoulos, 2011;Wong, 2011;L€ uders et al, 2012;Noachtar & R emi, 2012;Panayiotopoulos, 2012).…”

“…Epilepsy is a complex disorder of brain electrical activity that results in recurrent convulsions. [1,2] Seizures occur due to abnormal neuronal discharge. Oxidative stress is one of the major role players in seizure genesis.…”
