The integration of industrial automation systems and software agents has been practiced for many years. However, such an integration is usually done by experts and there is no consistent way to assess these practices and to optimally select one for a specific system. Standards such as the ISO/IEC 25023 propose measures that could be used to obtain a quantification on the characteristics of such integration. In this work, the suitability of these characteristics and their proposed calculation for assessing the connection of industrial automation systems with software agents is discussed. Results show that although most of the measures are relevant for the integration of agents and industrial automation systems, some are not relevant in this context. Additionally, it was noticed that some measures, especially those of a more technical nature, were either very difficult to computed in the automation system integration, or did not provide sufficient guidance to identify a practice to be used.

Smart Cities: The Main Drivers for Increasing the Intelligence of Cities

Since the concept of smart cities was introduced, there has been a growing number of surveys aiming to identify the dimensions that characterize them. However, there is still no consensus on the main factors that should be considered to make a city more intelligent and sustainable. This report contributes to the topic by identifying the most important smart city drivers from the perspective of professionals from four broad areas of expertise: applied social sciences, engineering, exact and Earth sciences, and human sciences, which provide important insights for the understanding of smart and sustainable cities. In this study, we conducted a wide and detailed literature review, in which 20 potential smart city drivers were identified. The drivers were prioritized from the results of a survey conducted with 807 professionals that work in the concerned field. The results showed that the seven drivers identified as the most important to increase the intelligence of cities are related to the governance of cities.

In this paper, a new cybernetic control technology that can be used in complex software systems will be introduced. In this approach, the software systems are governed by cybernetic control objects and the class libraries defining the types of these cybernetic control objects are produced by special meta-programming platforms. In this approach, the requirements of the software to be developed are received from the programmer by meta-programming systems before coding. Actually, the cybernetic control objects have standard design and properties and the programmers only determine the quantities and the locations of these properties before library production process. Then, the meta-programming platforms build project-specific class libraries based on previously determined code templates. By this way, the cybernetic control objects are constructed with optimal memory and they can receive feedback about ongoing operations on the process. With the help of the feedback coming from the process, the control objects steer the process in the line of the programmer directives. By this way, the control of the programmer on the software increases significantly. In addition, in this paper, a typical application of this approach to the multithread programming will be introduced.
