Modern dietary guidelines for healthy pregnancy; maximising maternal and foetal outcomes and limiting excessive gestational weight gain

Abstract: Maternal dietary habits influence maternal and foetal health, representing a pathway for intervention to maximise pregnancy outcomes. Advice on energy intake is provided on a trimester basis, with no additional calories required in the first trimester and an additional 340 kcal d and 452 kcal d needed for the second and third trimesters. Energy intake depends on pre-gravid body mass index (BMI); underweight women are recommended an increase of 150, 200 and 300 kcal d during the first, second and third trimeste… Show more

“…PHSG's systolic and diastolic daytime BP values of 121 mmHG and 87 mmHG, respectively, and nighttime BP values of 120 mmHG and 86 mmHG, respectively, were significantly higher than those in the HG and PSYG (P < 0.001) and are at the low end of newly defined pregnancy-specific stage 1 hypertension (50), although caution is warranted as ambulatory measurement used here produces higher BP values than office-based mercury sphygmomanometer readings (51). PHSG women consumed significantly more calories including from fat, protein, and sugar compared to the HG and at 2,665 calories per day were slightly above the 2,500 calories per day recommended as an upper limit (52).…”

“…Furthermore, the mothers of PAE newborns had significantly higher pre-pregnancy BMI, but gained significantly less weight during pregnancy than the mothers of control newborns ( P = 0.008, Student’s t-test and P = 0.008, Mann-Whitney U, respectively). However, the weight gain in both groups was within the recommended range 20 .…”

“…This sequence of procedures ensures that the placenta has all it needs to perform at a high level while the fetal weight increases swiftly. Fetuses rely on the operation of various systems that have been established long in advance of their maximum rates of growth and development (Elliott-Sale et al, 2019).…”
