The linear form of the Muskingum model has been widely applied to river flood routing. I iowever, a nonlinear relationship between storage and discharge cxists in most actual river systems, making the use of the linear model irinppropriale. 111 t tiis paper, a nonlinear Muskingum model is solved using the state variable modeling tecliniclue. Various curve fitting techniques are ernployrd for the cdibra[ion of modc4 pranteters, and their performances within the model are compared. thth linear atid nonlincar niodels are applied to an cxaniple with pronounced nonliiwarity between storage and discliarge. Abstract:The Nash model was used for application of the Kalman ®lter. The state vector of the rainfall±runo system was constituted by the IUH (instantaneous unit hydrograph) estimated by the Nash model and the runo estimated by the Nash model using the Kalman ®lter. The initial values of the state vector were assumed as the average of 10% of the IUH peak values and the initial runo estimated from the average IUH. The Nash model using the Kalman ®lter with a recursive algorithm accurately predicted runo from a basin in Korea. The ®lter allowed the IUH to vary in time, increased the accuracy of the Nash model and reduced physical uncertainty of the rainfall±runo process in the river basin. #

Abstract:An instantaneous unit sediment graph (IUSG) model in conjunction with Kalman ®lter was investigated for prediction of sediment yield from an upland watershed in Northwestern Mississippi. The state vector of the watershed sediment yield system was constituted by the IUSG and then the sediment yield was estimated by the IUSG model using Kalman ®lter. The initial values of the state vector were assumed as the average of the IUSG values and the initial sediment yield estimated from the average IUSG. The IUSG model using Kalman ®lter with a recursive algorithm accurately predicted sediment yield from watershed W-5, Mississippi. The ®lter allowed the IUSG to vary in time, increased the accuracy of the IUSG model, and reduced physical uncertainty of the sediment yield process in the watershed.
