Modern carbonate mounds: porcupine drilling

Abstract: Material in this publication may be copied without restraint for library, abstract service, educational, or personal research purposes; however, this source should be appropriately acknowledged. The Belgica mound province belongs to the best documented carbonate mound provinces worldwide. Very high resolution seismic profiling, multibeam bathymetry, and side-scan sonar imaging have shed light on the stratigraphic, structural, and morphological setting. The mounds are rooting on a strongly erosive unconformity… Show more

“…These measurements provide percent weight values for the amount of calcite found at each sample location with instrument uncertainties of ±1%. The small uncertainty (±1%) in calcium carbonate measurements generates only a tiny change (generally ≪1%) in rock physics model velocity results, and we therefore neglect this uncertainty [e.g., Henriet et al ., ]. With porosity, sediment density, and pore water density also constrained by measurements, we converted weight percent of calcium carbonate into bulk percent calcite for each measurement.…”

“…covered by dense coral growth) or geologically (e.g. composed of soft sediments as a result of fluid escape) more ''active'' and be a potential site to study the relation between fluid migration and coral bank development (Henriet et al 1999). Based on the initial interpretation, The´re`se Mound was selected as a special target site to study the present processes involved in mound development in the EU 5th framework projects GEOMOUND, ECOMOUND and ACES.…”

“…However, the Neogene mounds are dissimilar to Paleozoic carbonate mounds in that they are composed of coldwater coral in a matrix of mixed siliciclastic and carbonate sediments. They also lack stromatactis structures or any evidence of submarine car-bonate cementation as is common in Paleozoic carbonate mounds (De Mol et al, 2002;Henriet et al, 2005;Gregg et al, 2006).…”
