This paper presents the design, implementation, and results from a dynamic wireless spectrum access system built using GNU Radio and software-defined radios (SDRs) as part of an undergraduate senior design project. The project involved designing and implementing a dynamic wireless spectrum access system in which the secondary user (SU) learns the unknown transmission behavior (channel occupancy and time slots) of the primary user (PU) and then opportunistically transmits during time slots and using channels when they are not being used by the PUs. The main design objective was to maximize the throughput of the SU while minimizing the interference to the PU. A transmitted signal energy detection algorithm with an adaptive threshold was employed to set the channel states as occupied or not occupied. Channel state information was used to determine the PU behavior in a deterministic manner such that the unused time slots and channels could be exploited. A channel allocation scheme for the SU is proposed using the PU channel occupancy information to calculate the channel(s) and time slots available to the SU at any given time. Simulation and physical testing of the system validate the proposed algorithms. Students' feedback affirms GNU Radio and SDRs to be an effective platform for introducing abstract mathematical communications theory concepts, such as cognitive radios and dynamic spectrum allocation, in a hands-on manner.

In this paper, the deployment of a radio monitoring system using software-defined radio (SDR) technologies is addressed. The main advantage of using software-defined radio is its reconfigurable ability and flexibility to set the communication parameters when monitoring radio signals. We propose a feasible architecture of spectrum monitoring in which a control center is built using GNU Radio platform; some remote monitoring stations are built with SDR devices. At each remote station, an SDR dongle embedded with Realtek RTL2832U chip and a USRP (universal software radio peripheral) device are used to measure radio signals. Through TCP/IP network, measurement results or complex sampled data from the SDR devices can be sent to the monitoring center. Some key measurement tools for radio monitoring such as spectrum analyzer and audio/video player are also implemented in the proposed system. The major benefit of the proposed architecture is the cost-effective and flexible platform as compared with traditional spectrum monitoring systems. Moreover, both the radio signals and demodulated audio/video content can be remotely monitored at the control center.

This paper presents the effective exploitation of Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) in Raspberry Pi for fast Fourier transform (FFT) computation. Very fast computation of FFT is found useful in computer vision based navigation system, Global Positioning System (GPS), HAM radio and on Raspberry Pi. A comparison is performed over the speed of FFT computation on BCM2835 GPU with that of 700 MHz ARM processor available in Raspberry Pi and also with intel-COREi5 processors. The FFT is computed for any one dimensional input signal and its analysis is done on different processors with varying signal lengths. The GNU radio is installed on Raspberry Pi, and the FFT computation done on GNU radio is accelerated using GPU of Raspberry Pi. Even though the Raspberry Pi GPU is primarily built for video enhancement, the parallel computational ability of GPU is utilized in this paper for accelerated FFT computation.
