Moderating Role of the Form of Maltreatment Experienced by Children on the Effectiveness of a Parent Training Program

Abstract: The study examines whether the form of maltreatment experienced by the child moderates the effects of a parent training program (PTP) on the probability that the child's case will be closed. This study involved 736 children on whom the Montreal child protective services (CPS) agency had an active file between 2007 and 2015. The experimental group was composed of all children with a parent who participated in the PTP Incredible Years ( n = 368). A control group was matched with the experimental group based on a… Show more

“…Some studies of the etiology of PTSD are based on small non-probability samples, often have a relatively large proportion of non-responses, and failure to collect prospective data. The lack of relevant comparison groups may compromise the ability to evaluate the etiology of anxiety (Sicotte et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Thus, developing sensitive and nurturing parenting-in line with attachment theory (Bowlby 1982)-is fundamental to appropriately responding to the emotional needs of the child (Harden et al 2016). More recently, the program has been successfully adapted for use with children in the welfare system (Hurlburt et al 2013;Letart et al 2010;Marcynyszyn et al 2011) and participation has been found to substantially increase the probability (by over a third) of a child's case being closed (Sicotte et al 2018).…”
