Moderate weight reduction improves red cell aggregation and factor VII activity in overweight subjects

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a dietary intervention to reduce body weight on red cell aggregation (RCA), factor VII activity, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) activity, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen, ®brino-gen, whole blood and plasma viscosity, haematocrit and lipids. DESIGN: Open single stranded study of dietary intervention for weight loss in a volunteer sample. “…The risk for overweight smokers rises more steeply with BMI, to reach a 12-fold risk at BMI > 29 kg/m 2 . Obesity is undoubtedly an important primary cause of IHD and stroke, operating through the effects of weight gain on hypertension (Dyer et al 1994), hyperlipidaemia (Bjorntorp, 1990;Denke et al 1993Denke et al , 1994, NIDDM and increased blood coagulability (Hankey et al 1997). These metabolic effects relate specifically to the intra-abdominal fat accumulation, so although elevated BMI brings increased cardiovascular risk, at least in younger individuals, more apple-shaped ('android') fat distribution is a stronger risk factor.…”
