Moderate to vigorous physical activity and sedentary behavior change in self-isolating adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil: A cross-sectional survey exploring correlates

Abstract: Background: The self-distancing measures imposed major changes in daily life routine. This study aimed to (i) evaluate the changes (pre-versus during pandemic) in time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in selfisolating Brazilians during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (ii) to explore correlates of MVPA and SB. Methods: A cross-sectional self-report online survey, evaluating the time spent in MVPA and SB pre and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic, behavior… Show more

“…This study identified no significant difference between wave 1 during the first strict lockdown in April-May and wave 2 at the ending of the first lockdown in June-July. However, this study extends previous literature, identifying significant drops between these waves and the August-September wave during the period of eased restriction and November-January wave during the second lockdown in the UK [2,47,48]. In general, MVPA attainment in this sample was far lower than might be expected from other estimates of PA in the UK population [49,50].…”

“…35 A recent study from Brazil showed reduced moderate to vigorous physical activity and increased SB during the application of COVID-19 related social distancing measures. 15 Similarly, a large portion of the current sample reported a decrease in PA and an increase in SB. These results are alarming and might be associated with adverse health effects.…”

“…14 Another study from Brazil showed reduced moderate to vigorous physical activity and increased SB during the application of COVID-19 related social distancing measures. 15 Such changes in lifestyle during the COVID-19 crisis might have long-term effects on health, subsequently the body response to infections. In a review, exercise has been shown to ameliorate the response of the body to respiratory tract viral infections.…”

“…Indeed, in pre-pandemic times PA has been identified as a protective factor against incident depression [ 21 ] and anxiety [ 22 ]. However, decreased levels of PA were observed in the general population in multiple countries [ 11 , 23 , 24 ] during the pandemic. This rapid systematic review aims to outline current evidence regarding the associations of PA and exercise with depression and anxiety during the Covid-19 pandemic.…”
