Models of Adult Day Care: Findings From a National Survey

Abstract: We examined a nationally representative sample of 60 adult day care centers to describe the state of this evolving care modality after a decade's growth. Results indicate that day care centers can be categorized into three models of care, each of which serves a distinctive subpopulation. Model appropriateness was tested with analysis of variance of differences in participant characteristics. Services, staffing, costs, and other program features are contrasted among the three models.

“…In brief, the most commonly mentioned active medical conditions of the care recipients reported by their caregivers are consistent with chronic conditions found by researchers who have studied similar older adult populations receiving adult day services (17,18). In descending order, these conditions were Alzheimer's disease/dementia (52%), stroke (30%), arthritis (26%), heart disease (26%), hypertension (26%), sensory deficits (17%), depression (13%), diabetes (13%), and seizure disorders (13%).…”

“…After World War II, these day care centres were used to treat war veterans with war-related traumas. In Montreal, day care was first offered in the 1940s, but little is known about the form and content of the care (Gaugler et al, 2003a;Hunter, 1992;Weissert, 1976;Weissert et al, 1989). The first known day care for the elderly in the USA was at Hudson Day Center in New York in 1954.…”

Ils offrent en général plus de services thérapeutiques et de santé.…”
