Models as enablers of agility in complex systems engineering

Abstract: Complex systems engineering programs not only deal with the inherent complexity of the systems they develop, they also face shorter time‐to‐market, increasing changes in environments and usages, and more sophisticated industrial schemes. The ability to adapt to new circumstances, or agility, becomes mandatory. In this paper we present how Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches can be enablers of the implementation of agility in complex systems engineering programs. Known to provide additional engine… Show more

“…Although architecture models have proven their contribution to the implementation of agile approaches on complex systems engineering [Navas 2020], current practices and tools do not suffice to (i) demonstrate to the customers the value that is acquired at each increment (e.g. by demonstrating the intended behavior of the system at operation), (ii) implement design approaches founded on e.g.…”

“…Capabilities help structure engineering activities by providing powerful means to assign responsibilities and cadence the synchronization of all teams (architects, developers, V&V engineers) by defining the functional expectations of each development iteration [Navas 2020]. Therefore, capabilities constitute an excellent support to reflect the most structuring features captured in the feature model.…”

“…Over the past decades, during the process of complex system design, particularly in fields like aerospace engineering and the development of launch vehicles, engineers have faced numerous challenges. Because engineers do not only deal with system complexity, but also face challenges of time‐to‐market and sophisticated industrial schemes, 1 and the significance of agile design is becoming increasingly numerous. Agile design, in this context, signifies a disparate from traditional design paradigms.…”
