“…Pesticide and fertilizer applications for agriculture have been limited and polluting industries are not allowed, restricting socioeconomic development in the source region. Navigation and environmental flows downstream of the Danjiangkou Reservoir were negatively impacted from the water diversions 50 . In addition, high prices of diverted water are an issue in water-receiving areas.…”

“…In the dry or normal years like 2014-2016, the TN output by the BDWD project accounted for more than 90% of the total TN output, indicating that a large proportion of the nitrogen was transported to other basins through the inter-basin water diversion project. The inter-basin water diversion project links different basins together and changes the original nutrient transportation within or between river basins, which creates new challenges for comprehensive environmental management across multiple basins [55]. The denitrification output accounted for 3.51% of the total nitrogen output, which was much lower than the inter-basin water diversion project and downstream water discharge output.…”

“…Sewage from scattered livestock, poultry farming and rural areas were estimated for calculations, based on the social and economic data collected from field investigations and statistics yearbooks. The transformation coefficients provided by China's First Census of Pollution Sources in 2010 were used for calculations [35]. Agricultural management practices in the study area were obtained from the local statistics bureau and experimental field surveys.…”
