European flounder Platichthys flesus life history patterns were investigated in 3 basins along a latitudinal gradient (Minho, N Portugal; Gironde, SW France; Seine, N France). We used coupled Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca otolith signatures and microstructure to retrospectively determine habitats occupied by flounder during their life, including early larval ontogeny. Flounder exhibited high life history plasticity among and even within basins, apparent by the diversity of habitats used during larval ontogeny and throughout their lives, and by the age at which flounder migrated to freshwater. Egg signatures probably had a strong maternal influence, and our interpretation suggests that flounder spawned and/or hatched predominantly in brackish waters in the Minho, while in the Gironde and Seine, flounder spawned and/or hatched either in coastal, brackish or freshwater environments. The freshwater egg signature was most frequent in the Seine. These interpretations contradict the current general assumption that flounder spawn exclusively in coastal waters. During pre-metamorphosis and metamorphosis, flounder were predominantly in brackish waters in the Minho, while in the Gironde and Seine, they were mainly in coastal and freshwater environments, respectively. The diversity of flounder life histories (LH) (i.e. sequence of habitat residence: freshwater, brackish or coastal) after metamorphosis was similar between the Minho (LH = 13), Gironde (LH = 13) and Seine (LH = 14) basins. The age at which flounder migrated to freshwater also varied among sites, at an earlier age in the Minho and Gironde (< 0.5 yr old) than in the Seine, where flounder migrating from the coast into freshwater reached maximum frequencies at age 1.3 yr old. Thus, catadromy in European flounder may be facultative, and the factors influencing flounder high LH plasticity deserve thorough research.

The paper reviews the di!erent physical forcings that control tidal #at hydrodynamics. Tidal propagation and cross-shore or long-shore currents, tidal asymmetry, wind-induced circulation, wave propagation and drainage processes are successively considered. Some simple methods are described for estimating cross-shore currents and wave-induced bottom shear stresses, and the results obtained are compared to "eld measurements on three contrasted sites in Europe. In particular the cross-shore current is shown uniform in the lower part of the #at, and decreasing towards the shore. Bottom friction-induced wave attenuation is simply formulated on gently sloping beds, leading to a maximum wave height that a #at can experience; it is proportional to the water height according to the ratio between the slope and the wave friction factor. The maximum related shear stress occurs at high water and is also proportional to the water depth. Maximum tidal velocities are very similar in the three sites where bottom sediment is muddy, suggesting a relationship between physical stresses and sediment characteristics. The consequences of physical forcings on sediment transport are listed. The bottom shear stress is suggested as the relevant parameter for comparing tidal and wave e!ects. In general, tide induces onshore sediment transport, whereas waves and drainage favour o!shore transport. The processes leading to a possible tidal equilibrium pro"le are analysed: they involve the intrinsic asymmetry that favours net deposition at high water, and an ebb dominance generated by the resulting bottom pro"le convexity. Eroding waves are likely to upset such a balance; this equilibrium then reduces to a trend for the system.

In this monthly basis study, we determined HS concentrations (by Adsorptive Square Wave Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry) along the entire river-seawater gradient of the Penzé estuary (NW France), with the aim to characterize the export of these compounds. In this watershed where agricultural activities are predominant, manuring activities were identified as being the main source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and HS. HS concentrations varied usually within a narrow range in fluvial waters, i.e., 1.8 ± 0.4 mgC L À1 (150 ± 40 lM), but increased significantly as the first flood of autumn occurred (>4 mgC L À1 in river and upper estuary). At this time, HS accounted for a very high proportion of DOC (>80%). As evidenced by the increasing contribution of HS to DOC, and by the increasing contribution of small colloidal HS species; this autumnal flood increase should be attributed to a greater retention and transformation of organic matter on soils over the hotter, drier, and lighter period preceding the first autumnal flood. In the mixing zone, HS displayed mostly conservative behaviour, although some removals were occasionally observed. Overall, our study suggests that preservation of HS could be relatively important during their transfer across macrotidal temperate estuaries, at least in systems affected by agricultural practices.
