Modelling the impacts of reservoir operations on the downstream riparian vegetation and fish habitats in the Lijiang River

Abstract: River flow regulations have great impact on the downstream aquatic ecosystem. It is important to investigate the response of target species to the changes in hydrological regimes so that we can explore possible remediation measures. Ecohydraulics models that integrate hydrodynamics processes and ecological processes have been shown to be efficient in achieving these objectives. This study developed an integrated model which combined a two-dimensional hydrodynamic module with a vegetation evolution module and a … Show more

“…A habitat suitability model was used in 12 papers to evaluate the impact of the changes in physical-chemical conditions on the habitat of biotic communities. Li et al [99] used water depth, velocity and water temperature as input variables in their habitat suitability model to calculate the minimum flow needed for fish habitat conservation. The majority of articles (13) used an integrated model (i.e., most were an integration of hydrodynamic and habitat suitability models), in which the impact of hydropower dam construction on river morphology was linked to water quality, food web ecology or biological preferences (Table 1).…”

“…Nevertheless, most model approaches base their assessment on physical-chemical water quality or the habitat suitability of adult fish (e.g., Ruetz and Jennings [32]; Freeman et al [31]; Cerny et al [62]; Grand et al [55]; Hatten et al [22]; Garcia et al [18]; Li et al [99]; Cioffi and Gallerano [112]; Chen et al [131]; Wang et al [25]), including often purely the most common and economic valuable species (e.g., trout, salmon) or endangered species. One publication considered the impact of flow regulation on algae [38]; one paper focused on the effect on habitat suitability of amphibians [26]; and just three papers considered macroinvertebrates [25,37,115] in their assessment.…”

“…Chen et al [37] focused on the development and application of CA approach for ecological and ecohydraulics modeling. Li et al [38] developed an integrated model, which combined a two-dimensional hydrodynamic module with a vegetation evolution module and a sh habitat module. They used an unstructured CA in the vegetation module.…”

“…The TGD began operation in 2003, and after three major impoundments, construction was completed in 2009 [12]. With the construction and operation of the TGD, YRB hydrological drought has been intensively affected by human activities [6], and the reservoir operations may seriously affect the ecological balance of the downstream environments [13].…”
