Modelling the dynamics of complex early design processes: an agent-based approach

Abstract: Among the different phases of complex design processes, early design is the most dynamic and unpredictable stage since it involves a great deal of uncertainty, concurrency of activity streams, collaborative design iterations, and distributed and adaptive decision-making behaviour in response to both organizational commitments and to the occurrence of unforeseen events. This paper argues that current activity-based modelling approaches have limited ability to capture the dynamics of complex early design process… Show more

“…Mykoniatis and Angelopoulou (2020) provide a framework for integrating different simulation methods in different domains such as socio-technical systems, cyber-physical systems, business and healthcare organizations. Agent-based simulations of new product development processes seek to integrate in a much more sophisticated way the social interaction between agents, including skill levels and behaviours (see Hassannezhad et al, 2019;Fernandes et al, 2017;Crowder et al, 2012). Other simulation methods are now integrating hybrid simulation and multi-paradigm simulation to capture the complexity of real systems, providing a more comprehensive and holistic view of the system under investigation.…”

“…The reason is related to the cost, as well as the uncertainty, of developing a new system, which is around threequarters of a program's total life cycle (Fernandes et al, 2015;Georgiadis et al, 2013). Actually, most of the cost of a system is determined during the design phase because of multiple iterations, intrinsic (Fernandes et al, 2017;McNerney et al, 2011). At the base of the design decision-making process, there are the sets of systems requirements that should be managed and developed.…”

“…Despite its limitations, the ABM approach has been used in a variety of different fields, including energy management (Zhao, Suryanarayanan & Simões 2013), stock trading (Luo, Liu & Davis 2002) and spatial planning (Ligtenberg et al 2004) as is it an efficient way to represent complex phenomena. However, in the field of studying design teams, agent-based models have been used to model collaborative behaviour as they are efficient in modelling dynamic systems, interactions and features like learning and adaptation (Fernandes et al 2017; Lapp, Jablokow & McComb 2019; Cao et al 2020).…”
