Modelling solar irradiance from ground-based photometric observations

Abstract: Total solar irradiance (TSI) has been monitored from space since 1978, i.e. for about four solar cycles. The measurements show a prominent variability in phase with the solar cycle, as well as fluctuations on timescales shorter than a few days. However, the measurements were done by multiple and usually relatively short-lived missions. The different absolute calibrations of the individual instruments and the unaccounted for instrumental trends make estimates of the possible long-term trend in the TSI highly un… Show more

“…Thus, models have been developed that reconstruct solar irradiance changes by accounting for sunspot darkening and facular brightening. The most successful models reproduce over 90% of the measured TSI variability (e.g., Krivova et al 2003;Chapman et al 2013;Yeo et al 2014Yeo et al , 2017aDasi-Espuig et al 2016;Lean 2018;Wu et al 2018;Chatzistergos et al 2020a). The success of these models suggests that it is possible to reconstruct past irradiance variability, provided the contributions by spots and faculae are known.…”

“…We tested the validity of this calibration by producing the photometric sum series (Preminger et al 2002;Chatzistergos et al 2020a) from the calibrated full-disk images. The photometric sum is a sum over a contrast image whose CTL variation has been restored…”

“…The Ca ii K‐plage index is the most commonly used proxy for the solar UV irradiance variation (Foukal et al 2009; Kariyappa & Pap 1996; Singh et al 2021a; Worden et al 1998), and it is also used to reconstruct Total Solar Irradiance variations (cf. Chatzistergos et al 2020a; Preminger et al 2011). However, Johannesson et al (1995) cautioned that without including the active network, the UV secular trend cannot be properly accounted for.…”
