Modelling Road User Perceptions towards Safety, Comfort, and Chaos at Shared Space: The via Maqueda Case Study, Italy

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the impacts of perception of infrastructure, sociodemographic characteristics, frequency of road use, and road user perception on safety, comfort, and chaos with respect to shared spaces. The case study area was the Via Maqueda, a shared street in Palermo, Italy. A face-to-face survey was conducted and the answers of 200 of the participants, who use three active travel modes, namely, walking, cycling, and micromobility, were analysed. The results obtained from the ordered logit m… Show more

“…Gao et al (2019) Bike-sharing Chinese residents SEM Perceived usefulness, facilitating conditions and perceived risks were important determinants to the adoption of bike sharing systems. such as bike-, scooter-or carsharing (e.g., Akgün-Tanbay et al, 2022;Campisi et al, 2021;Eccarius & Lu, 2020;Gao et al, 2019;Mattia et al, 2019), whereas fewer publications focus on shared mobility services in a broader sense (e.g., Jie et al, 2021;Ko et al, 2021;Reck & Axhausen, 2021). Our research aligns itself with the latter stream of research, focusing specifically on the intention to adopt different shared electric vehicle types available via eHUBs.…”

“…This study hypothesizes that perceived safety acts as an intermediate parameter that is influenced by the road environment [43][44][45] and affects route choices. In other words, first/last mile travelers search both for the shortest and the safest path to reach their destination [46]. Based on this hypothesis, the shortest path algorithm is updated considering utility estimations and modes as the weight of each link.…”
