Young soil researchers represent a generation that will respond to future soil challenges and implement connected policy developments. They will deal with emerging challenges and opportunities for soil protection, such as climate change, land use change, scenario analysis, big data, modelling integration, one health aspects, and soil living laboratories. In this context, the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) provides an inclusive forum for participatory research in the EU and beyond. In 2021, at the first gathering of the EUSO Stakeholders Forum, young researchers were actively engaged through the establishment of the EU Young Soil Researchers Forum. This resulted in interesting presentations, discussions, and research outputs, which have been brought together in this virtual thematicissue. Similar support for young soil researchers is expected at the 2024 EUSO Stakeholders Forum.

Understanding the soil phosphorus (P) cycle is a prerequisite for the sustainable management of land resources. The sequential-extraction method was used to determine P fractions in 513 soils of Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr. plantations. With these data, this study applied structural equation modeling to evaluate the interaction between various soil P fractions. Quantitative analysis was conducted on the importance of different soil P pools and P transformation pathways on soil P availability in a larch plantation. Our study showed that soluble inorganic P (Pi) was directly positively affected by labile Pi, labile organic P (Po), secondary mineral P, and primary mineral P, and was directly negatively affected by moderately labile Po. Soluble Pi was not directly affected by occluded P. The primary mineral P (β = 0.40) had the greatest total impact on soluble Pi, followed by secondary mineral P (β = 0.32) and labile P (labile Pi and Po, β = 0.31), and then occluded P (β = 0.11), with the total impact of moderately labile Po being relatively small (β = −0.06). In summary, this study reveals the important roles of soluble Pi in P transformations and in determining overall P availability in soils, as well as the extensive effects of weathering on soil P dynamics in L. principis-rupprechtii plantations.

Aim Balanced crop nutrition is key to improve nutrient use efficiency and reduce environmental impact of farming systems. We developed and tested a dynamic model to predict the uptake of P and K in long-term experiments to better understand how changes in soil nutrient pools affect nutrient availability in crop rotations. Methods Our RC-KP model includes labile and stable pools for P and K, with separate labile pools for placed P and organic fertilizers including farm yard manure (FYM). Pool sizes and crop-specific relative uptake rates determined potential uptake. Actual crop uptake from labile pools was based on concepts developed by Janssen et al. (Geoderma 46:299-318, 1990). The model was calibrated on three long-term experiments from Kenia (Siaya), Germany (Hanninghof) and the United Kingdom (Broadbalk) to estimate parameter values for crop-specific relative uptake rates and site-specific relative transfer rates. Results The model described N, P and K uptake accurately with a Nash-Sutcliff modelling efficiency of 0.6–0.9 and root mean squared errors of 2.6–3.4 kg P ha−1 and 14–20 kg K ha−1. Excluding organic labile pools did not affect model accuracy in Broadbalk in contrast to Hanninghof where Mg deficiencies affected crop uptakes in treatments without Mg or FYM. Conclusions This relatively simple model provides a novel approach to accurately estimate N, P and K uptake and explore short- and long-term effects of fertilizers in crop rotations. Interactions between limiting nutrients affecting actual nutrient uptake were captured well, providing new options to include N, P and K limitations in crop growth models.
