Modelling packet loss in RTP-based streaming video for residential users

Abstract: Abstract-Packet loss is a major problem for real-time Internet applications. Markov models of packet loss are often used to develop and evaluate the performance of these applications. Despite their wide use, these models have not been validated in terms of how well they capture the loss conditions experienced by residential Internet users. We evaluate the accuracy of common packet loss models using traces of IPTV-like traffic measured on residential ADSL and Cable links, and find that these models are insuffic… Show more

“…Future work will evaluate media quality at the time the circuit breaker triggers, with a range of media types and codecs, to confirm this. We will also validate the factor-of-ten multiple of the TCP throughout as the circuit breaker threshold, and use a synthetic loss model [18] to explore performance in higher loss regimes.…”

“…A modification to RTP that improves throughput is introduced in Reference . In Reference the authors present a packet loss model for RTP. In Reference impairments under RTP are modeled when robust header compression (ROHC) is used.…”

“…Datagram-based transport of RTP has been extensively studied for different network conditions and media types. Specifically, in [6] Ellis et al come up with an analytical model of packet loss when video is transmitted by means of traditional RTP. In [7], a mathematical model that combines basic forward error corrected mechanisms with UDP-based RTP in the context of wireless networks is presented.…”
