The objective of the paper is an application of the model of the microstructure evolution based on three-dimensional cellular automata (CA) for hot shape rolling simulation. A short description of frontal cellular automata (FCA) is presented. The model contains two parts: the deformation and the microstructure evolution. The CA cells do not remain as undistorted cubes, but they are deformed according to the strain tensor. The independence of the grain growing from the shape and the sizes of the cell is ensured by the so-called "virtual front tracking". The microstructural part of the model simulates two phenomena: the nucleation and the growth of nuclei. There are three issues considered in the paper: the creation of the initial microstructure, the recrystallization and the phase transformation. When recrystallization is simulated, the nucleation and the grain boundary migration depend on the deformation parameters such as: the temperature, the strain, the strain rate, the dislocation density and the crystallographic orientation. The nucleation during the phase transformation is a function of the cooling rate and the final microstructure. These phenomena along with the deformation can be modeled over a wide range of multi-stage deformation processes. The process of shape rolling is chosen as an example. The data needed for the FCA calculations is received from the modeling by the finite element method. The results of the simulation of the microstructure evolution, during the last three passes of the round bars rolling with the consequent phase transformation, are presented in the paper.

This work presents description and comparison of internal and state variable models of flow stress in varying processing conditions. Three models were analyzed. The first one is based on dislocation theory and describing the mechanical behavior of f.c.c. polycrystalline structures. The second and third models are standard and modified Sellars' flow stress models. Models were adapted for two commercial codes based on finite element method: QForm7 and Forge 2005. The compression test of 45 grade steel with instant changes of strain rate was simulated. Calculated compression force and flow stress were compared with the experimental data from plastometric tests. The forging process was simulated by QForm7. Results obtained by both internal and modified Sellars' models confirm their high accuracy for analysis and prediction of the flow stress under the varying deformation conditions.

The evolution of metallic material microstructures under thermomechanical treatment is a critical element that influences the in‐use properties of the final product. In the last four decades, many researchers around the world focused on reliable numerical recreation of phenomena that occur during metal processing. Particular attention is put on the phase transformation, texture evolution, and recrystallization predictions to simulate material behavior at the subsequent processing stages. In recent years, approaches taking into account explicit representation of morphological elements during simulation are becoming more frequently used even at the industrial scale. One of those methods addressed within the current article in application to static recrystallization (SRX) modeling is the cellular automata (CA) approach. A review of the CA‐based full‐field SRX models highlights the progress in capabilities of developed approaches in consideration of various mechanisms controlling microstructure evolution like heterogeneous energy distribution, probabilistic or physics‐based nucleation, grain growth driven by different driving forces, or grain boundary migration is presented within the article. The issue of the computational time associated with 3D CA modeling is particularly addressed. Possible approaches to reducing simulation times based on efficient use of modern computer architecture are finally evaluated as guidelines for further model development.
