Modelling of the Fine-Grained Materials Briquetting Process in a Roller Press with the Discrete Element Method

Abstract: By using the Altair® EDEM™ software, which implements the discrete element method, modelling and further study of the processes occurring in the roller press’s deformation area were carried out. It was shown that the discrete element method makes it possible to accurately describe the phenomena occurring in the area of roller press deformation compared with the finite element method. Models of material compaction in a roller press are developed using calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) and copper ore concentrate. … Show more

“…In this part of the briquette from the front side, one can therefore expect the greatest packing of the material, resulting from the greatest compacting pressure acting at this point [46]. These results coincide with the simulation tests carried out for briquetting of fine-grained materials using the discrete element method [50]. The temperature distribution curve for material M4 differs from the other curves.…”

“…The proposed scale-up model built based on Equations ( 6)-( 9) is essential for improving stirred mill operational parameters and design. When the scale-up model allows for the accurate prediction of the operating parameters, it is possible to reduce the cost of the re-design of the full scale (industrial mill), and all the necessary improvements can be made on the laboratory prototype or during numerical modeling [62][63][64]. This reduces the time and cost of experiments for adjusting optimal operational parameters for grinding different materials.…”

“…This process is carried out by mapping a laboratory test that determines a physical property of bulk material, for example reflecting a test of the natural angle of repose, measuring the bulk density, etc [30,31], physical properties of bulk material, and then reflecting these tests to determine the input parameters of the model [32,33].…”
