A novel design technique of a Petri net-based concurrent control system is proposed in this paper. The idea is oriented on the effective implementation of the system within the FPGA device. In order to reduce the resources of the targeted device, the concurrent control system is optimized by the use of the authors’ techniques. The complete design flow is shown, including the modeling of the system by an interpreted Petri net, its further transformation to the hardware description language, adequate logic optimization, and final implementation within the destination FPGA. The presented method is explained by a case study example of the photovoltaic control system and compared with the already known technique. The performed experiments indicated a very high effectiveness of the proposed technique. It is shown that the photovoltaic control system designed according to the presented method reduces the logic resources of the destination FPGA device by up to 28%.

Modeling and simulation are key performance analysis and control techniques to optimize decision-making as well as design and operate complex production systems. They are also indicated as one of the technological pillars of modern industry and IT solutions supporting the implementation of the roadmap toward Industry 4.0 in the areas of digital transformation and automation. In the context of the required rapid transformation of today's enterprises, it becomes extremely important to look for solutions that allow the use of the existing infrastructure, information, and energy, so as to minimize the negative impact of new technologies and the transformation process itself on the environment. The article presents an approach to modeling large and complex production systems with the use of distributed Petri net models allowing the use of the possessed IT infrastructure as consistent with the idea of sustainable development in the activities of enterprises. This eliminates two major problems that render traditional models unusable. The first is related to the difficulties in analyzing and verifying models of enormous size and infinite space of states. The second is related to the required computing power, if such analyzes are to be performed on one computing unit, which would force the producers to replace the IT infrastructure. For this purpose, modular Petri nets are introduced. Other benefits of modularization, such as smaller components that can be independently analyzed, are also presented in the paper. The proposed modular Petri net has been implemented in the proprietary GPenSIM software. The paper is complemented by a practical example of industrial modeling of production systems with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) using the Modular Model with Intelligent Petri Modules.

This article presents a synthesis strategy aimed at minimizing the dynamic power consumption of combinational circuits mapped in LUT blocks of FPGAs. The implemented circuits represent the mapping of multi-output functions. Properly selected multi-output functions are described using a new form of the binary decision diagram (BDD), which is an extension of pseudomulti-terminal BDDs (PMTBDDs) in the literature. The essence of limiting power consumption is to include additional parameters during decomposition, such as the switching activity associated with the switching PMTBDD (SW-PMTBDD). In addition, we highlight the key importance of circuit optimization methods via non-disjoint decomposition when minimizing power consumption. An algorithm is proposed to assess the effectiveness of decomposition, considering several parameters, such as the number of non-disjoint decompositions as well as that of shared and non-shared bound functions or the switching activity. The results of experiments that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods are also included.
