Modelling of photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient yield coefficients in Scenedemus almeriensis culture as a function of nitrogen and phosphorus

Abstract: Photo-respirometric tecniques are applied for evaluating photosynthetic activity in phototrophic organisms. These methods allow to evaluate photosynthetic response under different conditions. In this work, the influence of nutrient availability (nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate) on the photosynthesis and respiration of Scenedesmus almeriensis was studied using short photo-respirometric measurements. Both photosynthesis and respiration increasing until saturation value and consecutively diminishing, presenting … Show more

“…The values of 1/Y for exp. 1, 2, 3, and its replicates are, respectively, 0.043, 0.5, 0.089 g C/g biomass, which agree with the recent work by Zurano et al (2021), where algae growth kinetic parameters were estimated. The parameters α and β increase from exp.…”

“…Within Chlorellaceae , C. vulgaris , C. sorokiniana , Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa , Auxenochlorella protothecoides , and many others are deeply studied species providing high biomass yield and several metabolites [ 37 ]. Regardless of the species of microalgae and type of metabolism, optimal growth depends on the availability of nutrient sources, among which the main ones are N, P, and S. Recently, Zurano et al [ 38 ] investigated the role of various nutrients and their concentrations on the growth of microalgae under photoautotrophic conditions. The authors found that both a deficiency and an excess of nutrients reduced the efficiency of metabolic processes.…”

“…However, modelling this phenomenon is complex, and in the literature can be found different results that mainly depend on the strain used and the type of experiment performed. The equations developed by Zurano et al, 2021 were taken as a good approximation of ammonium and phosphorus consumption rates by microalgae, as described in equation ( 17), where S is the substrate consumed by microalgae (NH4 + , NO3or PO4 -3 ). This was developed as a combination between an hyperbolic and a cardinal equation.…”
