Modelling of Noise Pollution Due to Heterogeneous Highway Traffic in India

Abstract: Compared to homogeneous traffic flow, traffic speed variation is drastic with the involvement of heterogeneity. With an intent of studying the negative upshot of fluctuating speeds of heterogeneous traffic on the environment, the current paper is the outcome of the research done on various highways located in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India, with an objective of developing a comprehensive noise prediction model by taking into account the traffic and roadway factors. Quantified noise levels … Show more

“…Effect of traffic volume on traffic noise are in accordance to studies reported by Halim and Abdullah [49]. Tandel and Macwan [50] and Kamineni et al [51] confirms heavy traffic highways have higher noise levels. Wei et al [52] in their study confirmed that increase in IRI increases the corresponding noise levels on roads.…”

“…Several studies have indicated that highway traffic is the major source of environmental noise (Murphy & King, 2007). In addition to traffic volume, speed and composition, the traffic-noise level is generally affected by the vehicle's propulsion system, aerodynamics and tire-pavement interaction (Abdur-Rouf & Shaaban, 2022; Kamineni et al, 2019;Murat & Ebru, 2016). However, vehicle-engine design and body-shape improvements reduce the noise generated by propulsion and aerodynamic effects (Yang et al, 2011;Bravo et al, 2012;Al-Masaeid & Fayyad, 2018).…”

“…Various types of vehicles produce different amounts of noise. Studies have found that fluctuations in the ratio of cars cause changes in traffic noise levels(Kamineni et al, 2019) and (Agarwal and Swami, 2011). An increase in traffic volume makes the noise level higher.…”
