Modelling of multiple impacts for the prediction of distortions and residual stresses induced by ultrasonic shot peening (USP)

Abstract: International audienceDuring a manufacturing process, the ultrasonic shot peening (USP) technique can be used as the final surface treatment. The aim of this operation is to introduce surface compressive residual stresses in order to prevent crack propagation advancement. Although the numerical simulation method is able to predict the level of residual stresses in a peened part, the 3D modelling of the real USP process, in which many successive and shifted impacts take place, is very delicate to perform and co… Show more

“…Apart from the compression, shot peening also induces surface roughness and causes cold work to the peened component [4] both of which are detrimental to the fatigue life of components. All the three products are influenced by several continuous and discrete parameters [6,7] which have a deterministic influence on the effectiveness of this shot peening [7]. Among some of these parameters, interactions exist between each other [8].…”

“…Achintha [30,46] developed a hybrid explicit finite element-eigenstrain model to investigate the parameters of LSP and found that the study's simulated results corresponded well with its experimental results. Other process parameters and results such as shot peening coverage [42], surface roughness [37], residual stress [30,34,38,39,52], and process angle [49] have been successfully simulated and studied. The simulation of S 2 PD to produce surface nano-crystallization was investigated by Bagherifard et al [53], while other studies found that element size is sensitive parameter in the simulation results [35].…”

“…21 Severe shot peening is applied in the ways of high-energy shot peening, ultrasonic shot peening, etc. [22][23][24] Most of the severe-plastic-deformation studies show a highly deformed layer with ultra-fine grains that has superior mechanical properties in comparison with the interior parts. 25 From this point of view, obtaining a highly deformed surface with better properties is a way of improving the wear properties of metallic mate-rials.…”
