Modelling of foil‐type transformer windings for computation of terminal impedance and internal voltage propagation

Abstract: The goal of this work is to develop an efficient numerical model of foil-type windings. An equivalent lumpedparameter circuit model is presented, which is suitable for the computation of the terminal impedance within a broad frequency range and for internal voltage propagation studies. Owing to the special geometrical winding shape, particular attention has been paid to the calculation of the involved lumped parameters where efficient and accurate formulas for parameter determination are presented. The core in… Show more

“…Several studies have been carried out to examine the transient voltage surge propagations through simulations and experimental setups [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Lumped equivalent circuit model have been widely used to analyze the resonant responses of windings subjected to switching surges [6,[17][18][19][20]. Various methods have been used to examine the transient voltage of transformer windings such as travelling wave theory, winding terminal characteristics and modal analysis [6,21,22].…”

“…The winding frequency response is, therefore, a characteristic of each transformer winding [2]. However, the mechanical structure of windings of electrical machines may be subjected to faults currents which may cause mechanical deformations or defects in their windings [3][4][5][6]. Hence, the parameter calculations of the transformer winding are an important tool to study its frequency behaviour.…”

“…For this reason, the transfer function method was used in [5] for the purpose of detecting the winding damages in power transformer. The development of the high-frequency lumped model to a transformer has been also accomplished [6] to support the FRA interpretation. Azizian and Bigdeli of [7] have developed an efficient approach for dynamic thermal modelling of cast resin dry-type transformer and an experimental validation of the model parameters have been performed using particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm.…”
