Modelling of Environmental Ageing of Polymers and Polymer Composites—Durability Prediction Methods

Abstract: Polymers and polymer composites are negatively impacted by environmental ageing, reducing their service lifetimes. The uncertainty of the material interaction with the environment compromises their superior strength and stiffness. Validation of new composite materials and structures often involves lengthy and expensive testing programs. Therefore, modelling is an affordable alternative that can partly replace extensive testing and thus reduce validation costs. Durability prediction models are often subject to … Show more

“…As the industry is concerned with lowering the testing time for fiber-dominated property deterioration in GFRPs, the model considerably shortens experimental testing time to short-term and slightly into the long-term steady-state to obtain model parameters, i.e., kinetic constants and time to reach steadystate. While it takes time to obtain the parameters, the most significant time saving comes from using the kinetic constants and the model [12,15,45].…”

“…Fibers of natural origin are generally susceptible to environmental degradation. This fact can essentially reduce the durability of natural fiber-based products and complicate the prediction of their long-term performance [28]. Heat, UV light, and atmospheric humidity are among common external factors affecting fiber appearance and performance during their growth, processing, and use.…”

“…Polymers including rubber are exposed to various environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, moisture, mechanical stress, or combinations of them [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. These factors negatively impact the properties or performance of polymers and affect the service life or durability of parts in which they are used.…”
