“…The Békés 103 cemetery is located at the confluence of the Black (Fekete-) and White (Fehér-) Körös Rivers in an area of dense Middle Bronze Age settlement (Duffy et al . 2014). These rivers drain the Apuseni Mountains in Transylvania to the east, the home of the contemporaneous Wietenberg group (Ciugudean & Quinn 2015).…”

“…1998), although the Bronze Age cemetery was not discovered at this time (Duffy et al . 2014). In 2011, we identified burnt human bone on the ground surface; since then, we have systematically collected cremated bone from across 3.2ha of the site (Figure 1).…”

“…The cemetery is on the northern edge of the town of Békés in Hungary, near the confluence of the Fekete and Fehér Köros Rivers ( Crișul Negru and Crișul Alb in Romanian). It was excavated between 2011 and 2019, and has 68 graves, mostly cremations, which have been published and extensively radiocarbon dated [ 68 – 71 ]. The site was in use between 2460 and 1010 BC, but the most intensive period (Phase 4) was between 1600 and 1280 BC.…”

“…At Szőreg-C, which was in use during multiple Bronze Age phases, burials were excluded if they could not be assigned to a particular phase [see 81,82]. My analysis excludes graves in all cemeteries that are recorded as 'disturbed' or 'destroyed', and only those burials from Békés 103 with preservation recorded as 'Good' or 'Very Good' [68]. See S1 Table in S1 File for the full list of burials included.…”

“…The counties around Hunedoara—Alba to the east and Arad to the west—have been the focus of recent research into the development of social complexity in the Bronze Age (see Nicodemus 2014; O'Shea 1996, 2011; O'Shea and Nicodemus 2019; O'Shea et al 2019; Quinn 2017). Hunedoara also encompasses the headwaters of the Körös River, known as the Criș in Romania, which has seen significant regional archaeological work (Duffy 2014, 2015; Duffy, Paja et al 2019; Duffy, Parditka et al 2019; Duffy et al 2013). Therefore, Hunedoara is an important next piece of the regional puzzle.…”
