Modelling in mixed matrix membranes for gas separation

Abstract: Various gas permeation models including Maxwell model, Bruggeman model, Lewis‐Nielson model and Pal model were compared via a modelling approach with the relative permeance of CO2 against published experimental data on silica filled polysulfone/polyimide (PSF/PI) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). However, none of the tested models were able to predict the data with good accurately. A closer look at the cross‐sectional image by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the fillers were actually prolate ell… Show more

“…To do so, He considered that the differential increment in the dielectric permeability (dP) resulting from addition of new particles was well described by P r = P e f f /P c = 1 + 3β f c φ f , that upon substitution of P c → P , P m → P + dP , and φ f → dφ f /(1 − φ f ) leads to Equation (42) in Table 3 after integration [138,165]. The Bruggeman model is assumed to be applicable to moderate filler loadings (0 ≤ φ f ≤ 0.35) [135,139,146]. Table 3.…”

“…where fc PP   is the ratio of the permeability of the dispersed to the continuous phase. Since the Maxwell model disregards interaction between particles, it generally describes the permeability well only at low loadings of filler particles with 0.2 o   [2,6,14,46]. Furthermore, the Maxwell model is the simplest among the various models presented in Table 1, and considers dispersant particle size to be negligibly small with no aggregation [2,17,30,35,46].…”
