Modelling and simulation of equiaxed dendritic structures permeability for Pb–Sn alloys

Abstract: In this investigation, the permeability of interdendritic liquid flow through the equiaxial mushy zone has been modelled for Pb-Sn alloys based on experimental measurements. In the present work by solving Navier-Stokes equation, the flow pattern around the equiaxed dendrite has been obtained and then permeability has been determined by applying Darcy's law. Numerical determined values of permeabilities have been analysed by the use of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical software. The… Show more

“…Several approaches have been used to directly measure the Darcy permeability of the mushy zone, e.g., by measuring the flow of eutectic melt in carefully temperaturecontrolled samples or by removing the melt during solidification and forcing water through the remaining porous microstructure [5,6].…”

“…Numerical experiments for parallel and normal flow to the primary dendritic arms in columnar structures with a high liquid volume fraction (>0.6) have been found to be more successful (Ganesan et al, 1992). Mirbagheri (2008;Mirbagheri & Khajeh, 2008) measured and simulated interdendritic flow for mushy alloy based on permeability factor and modeled some micro structural factors on the mushy alloys permeability. Bhat et al (1995) calculated from digitized images, the permeability for flow normal to primary dendrite arm using a Navier-Stokes finite element solver.…”
