CADOProSys Software (Computer Aided Design and Optimisation of Production Systems) was developed by the authors of this paper for didactic purposes, to facilitate the analysis and selection of certain equipment and processes occurring in production systems. Thus, this software can support the didactic process, by introducing IT into the selection and design stage, without eliminating the needs of knowledge of theory, of the design of material handling logistic equipment. The software is developed on several modules, a general one for defining the production system, one for selecting the production system and one for logistics. Within the logistics component, the application has implemented the robotic structure selection module and the material transport equipment selection module, the one presented in this paper. In the context of Industry 4.0, designing and choosing systems geared exclusively to the current needs of the user are essential processes. The application is structured on the theoretical design of the equipment concerned, but also connects to the technical specifications of existing components on the market.

The use of plastic bottles has become a significant environmental concern, and recycling them has become a priority. Small and medium-sized recycling companies must collect and categorize large volumes of plastic bottles and sell them to larger recycling firms, a process that is time-consuming, costly, and labor-intensive. This manual sorting process can pose health risks, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and can affect worker productivity. To address these issues, this study proposes the development of an automated conveyor belt system that can rapidly and accurately separate plastic bottles by type. The system utilizes an opaque and transparent plastic bottle separation platform, which saves time, cost, and manpower. This system design provides recycling SMEs with a competitive advantage by serving as a practical application model and a prototype with an easy-to-use concept. Key tools employed in this research include product design development (PDD), Kansei engineering, manufacturing process design, controlling system, and fault tree analysis (FTA). The light sensors are critical components in the separation process, detecting the opacity or transparency of the bottles' surfaces. The proposed prototype's reliability will be assessed by FTA, which considers all potential failures. This study contributes to the body of knowledge surrounding the integration of conveyor systems and provides valuable information for businesses seeking to optimize their sorting processes. In this study, the installed power (Pinst, kW) of several inclined belt conveyors operating in the mining industry of Turkey was investigated through two soft computing algorithms (i.e., genetic expression programming (GEP) and artificial neural networks (ANN)). For this purpose, the most crucial belt (i.e., belt length (L), belt width (W), belt inclination (α)), operational (i.e., belt speed (Vb) and throughput (Q)) and infrastructural (belt weight (Wb) and idler weight (Wid)) features of 42 belt conveyors were collected for each investigated belt conveyor. The collected data was transformed into a comprehensive dataset for soft computing analyses. Based on the GEP and ANN analyses, two robust predictive models were proposed to estimate the Pinst. The performance of the proposed models was evaluated using several statistical indicators, and the statistical evaluations demonstrated that the models yielded a correlation of determination (R2) greater than 0.95. Nevertheless, the ANN-based model has slightly overperformed in predicting the Pinst values. In conclusion, the proposed models can be reliably used to estimate the Pinst for the investigated conveyor belts. In addition, the mathematical expressions of the proposed models were given in the present study to let users implement them more efficiently.
