The increasing complexity of reactive systems can be mitigated with the use of components and composition languages in model-driven engineering. Designing composition languages is a challenge itself as both practical applicability (support for different composition approaches in various application domains), and precise formal semantics (support for verification and code generation) have to be taken into account. In our Gamma Statechart Composition Framework, we designed and implemented a composition language for the synchronous, cascade synchronous and asynchronous composition of statechart-based reactive components. We formalized the semantics of this composition language that provides the basis for generating composition-related Java source code as well as mapping the composite system to a back-end model checker for formal verification and model-based test case generation. In this paper, we present the composition language with its formal semantics, putting special emphasis on design decisions related to the language and their effects on verifiability and applicability. Furthermore, we demonstrate the design and verification functionality of the composition framework by presenting case studies from the cyber-physical system domain.

To design embedded systems, multiple models of their environments are typically required for different purposes such as simulation, verification, and actual execution. Some of these models abstract the actual physical environment to facilitate Verification and Validation (V&V) activities. Others capture the connection to hardware peripherals, necessary to deploy the systems on actual embedded boards. However, mapping a system to different environment models for different purposes remains a complex task for two main reasons. First, the environment is often tightly coupled with the system, and the board used for its execution. Second, formal properties verified during the design phase must be preserved at runtime. To tackle these issues, we propose an approach for designing UML models in a modular way and deploying them for V&V activities or embedded execution. This approach uses UML modularity mechanisms to specify the system in a generic way, and to connect it to a given (abstract or real) environment. This technique has been applied on several UML models of embedded systems to analyze their behaviors by simulation and LTL model-checking before deploying them on embedded STM32 boards. The Model-Driven Software Development Systems (MDSDS) were initially developed as an attempt to increase software development productivity and quality. This is because focusing on the logical solution abstract is more important than focusing on the pure infrastructure technicalities. Developers discovered the abstracted modelling technique that includes both programming and platform tools in the same time, which is now referred to as MDSDS.Nowadays, there are plenty of modeling software applications that almost achieve the same work, yet, the user might not be aware of the detailed nuances between them. This paper aims to discover the distinguishing features between four of the most commonly used MDSDS including; YAKINDU, Papyrus-RT, Rhapsody, and The State Machine Compiler (SMC). Analysis of the suitability of those platforms for modeling structural and behavioral domain specific software will be investigated.The same model will be built using the four MDSDSs. Then, main differences, obstacles, observations, and overall experience quality using those four environments will be discussed.
