Abstract-Vehicles on the road with some common interests can cooperatively form a platoon-based driving pattern, in which a vehicle follows another one and maintains a small and nearly constant distance to the preceding vehicle. It has been proved that, compared to driving individually, such a platoon-based driving pattern can significantly improve the road capacity and energy efficiency. Moreover, with the emerging vehicular adhoc network (VANET), the performance of platoon in terms of road capacity, safety and energy efficiency, etc., can be further improved. On the other hand, the physical dynamics of vehicles inside the platoon can also affect the performance of VANET. Such a complex system can be considered as a platoon-based vehicular cyber-physical system (VCPS), which has attracted significant attention recently. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on platoon-based VCPS. We first review the related work of platoon-based VCPS. We then introduce two elementary techniques involved in platoon-based VCPS: the vehicular networking architecture and standards, and traffic dynamics, respectively. We further discuss the fundamental issues in platoon-based VCPS, including vehicle platooning/clustering, cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), platoon-based vehicular communications, etc., and all of which are characterized by the tight coupled relationship between traffic dynamics and VANET behaviors. Since system verification is critical to VCPS development, we also give an overview of VCPS simulation tools. Finally, we share our view on some open issues that may lead to new research directions.Index Terms-Platoon, Cyber-physical system (CPS), Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET), Platoon-based vehicular communications, Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), Simulator.

Evaluation of flooding schemes for real-time video transmission in VANETs

Long-distance real-time video flooding over VANETs is a challenging topic due to the dynamic nature of vehicular networks. Real-time video transmission has high requirements in terms of bandwidth and delay, while VANETs are characterized by very limited radio resources and high mobility.Our objective is to compare ten different flooding schemes specially designed for this task, selecting the best one in terms of packet arrival ratio and PSNR. Additionally, we propose ACDB, an improved flooding scheme to cope with variable vehicle density situations.Furthermore, to ensure a good behaviour under any type of circumstances, we also study the impact of GPS drift on these schemes. Simulation results show that long-distance real-time video flooding transmission is feasible under certain vehicle density conditions, and provides enough quality for being used in future applications.

Abstract-Video is a significant medium in data communication through which enormous information could be conveyed in less time. Video Streaming helps us play the streamed data immediately without waiting for the entire file to get downloaded. When the quality of service of video streaming is considered, delay and jitter act as very important parameters, as video streams received late cannot be played and become useless hence wasting the network resources. In Vehicular Adhoc Networks, a special type of Mobile Adhoc Networks, the two possible usages of video streams are in infotainment applications and in the safety applications. In either case, these parameters play a major role. One of the vital techniques that are applied to reduce the delay encountered is Network coding. This paper simulates the transfer of the video streams from one vehicle to another in a group of vehicles in Vehicular Adhoc Networks. Network coding is applied on the video packets here. The routes are established with routing protocols OLSR, AODV and DSDV in the above mentioned scenarios. Node density is varied and these parameters of interest are monitored and analyzed.
