Modeling the spatial distribution of Chagas disease vectors using environmental variables and people´s knowledge

Abstract: BackgroundChagas disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to mammal hosts by triatomine insect vectors. The goal of this study was to model the spatial distribution of triatomine species in an endemic area.MethodsVector’s locations were obtained with a rural householders’ survey. This information was combined with environmental data obtained from remote sensors, land use maps and topographic SRTM data, using the machine learning algorithm Random Forests to model species distri… Show more

“…Previous work has shown that vector distributions are influenced by climate, land cover 100 types and rural/urban classifications [19][20][21][22][23][24]. Environmental variables for these three 101 data types were obtained at a nominal resolution of 5 × 5 kilometres.…”

“…Earlier studies [19,20,22,23,25], most notably [24], have modelled the distributions 279 of some of these species but only in specific regions, states or countries. Additionally, 280 comparisons with the previous work are limited because of differences in methodology, 281 data sets and spatial extent under consideration.…”

“…Data modelling [81] and algorithmic approaches [82] specify land-cover type and elevation as two principal determinants of triatomine movement at the scale applied in Loja. Analyses of triatomine genetic structure also suggest a strong influence of human transport (i.e., roads) on dispersal at this scale [83].…”
