Modeling the interactions between car and bicycle in heterogeneous traffic

Abstract: Summary In this paper, a new cellular automata model is proposed to simulate the car and bicycle heterogeneous traffic on urban road. To capture the complex interactions between these two types of vehicles, a novel occupancy rule is adopted in the proposed model to consider the variable lateral distances of mixed vehicular traffic. Based on massive simulations, microscopic fundamental diagrams under different bicycle densities are devised. With these, the bicycle's spilling behavior is then investigated and di… Show more

“…For instance, Chowdhury et al [19] developed the Symmetric Two-lane Cellular Automata (STCA) model, which was later expanded by Pederson and Ruhoff [20] to the multilane case. CA models were also used to mimic heterogeneous traffic flow [21][22][23][24].…”

“…Based on motorized-vehicle-bicycle interference characteristics, and the coupling between the vehicle CA model and the bicycle CA model, Zhang et al [19] presented a different kind of CA model (NS-BCA) to analyze the mixed traffic flow at intersections. Luo et al [20] proposed a new CA model to simulate car and bicycle heterogeneous traffic on an urban road. The proposed model captured the complex interactions between the two types of vehicles.…”

“…Xie et al proposed a CA model depicting mixed traffic flow consisting of motorized and non‐motorized vehicles and assumed that motorized vehicles decelerate by 1 with a probability that is a function of the non‐motorized vehicles' density in front of the vehicle's cell at each simulation step. Luo et al proposed a CA model to simulate the complex interactions between cars and bicycles, in which the influence of variable lateral distances on mixed vehicular traffic were considered and bicycle spilling behavior was investigated. In their study complicated lateral movement rules for bicycles were discussed in detail, but the updated rules for motorized vehicles are comparatively simple.…”

“…Although existing studies have addressed the interactions of motorized vehicles and bicycles on road sections and some have proposed simulation models , they have not considered the deceleration process of the motorized vehicle before it passes the bicycle ahead. In real cases, the vehicle always gradually reduces its speed to pass the bicycle ahead rather than abruptly decelerating.…”
