Introduction: Nowadays, increasing environmental risks to human health have caused increasing attention to use chemical nitrogen sources efficiently or nitrogen supplying from organic amendments. In this respect, chicken manure seems to be a good alternative to chemical nitrogen fertilizers. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the role of urea and poultry manure and ecological factors (climate) on the quantity of some chemical compositions of the potato tuber. Materials and Methods: To study the effects of urea and poultry manure on some potato tuber compositions, the factorial experiment was conducted in 2015-2016 during the growing season in 2 regions; Azna and Khorramabad which is located in Lorestan province in the west of Iran. The factors were 2 different sources of nitrogen supply including urea fertilizer and poultry manure. Results: Results show that the highest activity of nitrate reductase (NR) in both sites was observed using 10304 kg of poultry manure ha-1. The results also showed that the tuber nitrate content was only affected by the fertilizer source. In both studied places, the highest tuber nitrate was associated with high levels of urea fertilizer. Based on the results, the vitamin C of potato tubers grown by poultry manure were also superior to the relative vitamin C content. According to the results of this experiment, the accumulation of more than 2 times the nitrate in the tubers was obtained from urea fertilizer (244.2 versus 100 ppm). Conclusions: In order to achieve food security and an efficient and sustainable food chain, chemical fertilizers must be replaced with organic fertilizers. Thus, the belief that the use of organic fertilizers, at any level, would not cause any problem for the health of products is definitely incorrect.

This study assessed the growth of wheat under climate change conditions (increases in CO2 and temperature) in southwestern Iran. Future climate data were projected using long‐term climate data for radiation and minimum and maximum temperatures for the baseline period 1980–2010. The future climate scenarios made use of delta changes from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) in the R package of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project for 2040–2070. After generating the weather data, the Agricultural Production System Simulator wheat model was applied to assess the potential impact of climate change on wheat yield and the relative growth rate, crop growth rate, total dry weight and leaf area index. Averaged across all locations, an increase of 1.6 and 2.3°C in annual temperature was projected under representative concentration pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) and RCP8.5, respectively. The decrease in the average length of the growing season was 7.5 and 9.3% under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively, in the mid‐21st century with respect to baseline. The mean cumulative radiation will decrease by 11.6 and 14.3% averaged across all sites for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. Grain yield will decrease at all sites for both RCPs. The greatest decrease in wheat yield was projected for Izeh under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 (7.9 and 9.3%, respectively) for 2040–2070 relative to baseline. A greater grain yield at baseline than for the RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 scenarios was closely related to higher leaf area index, relative growth rate and crop growth rate values during the reproductive phase. Thus, these parameters can be defined as indicators of crop yield.

In areas where water is scarce, the use of regulated deficit irrigation, combined with decision support system tools, may decrease the impact of agriculture on natural water resources, as well as on energy consumption, thereby improving the profitability of farms. With this aim, the SUBSTOR-Potato model (incorporated in the DSSAT Program) was evaluated with a 2-year field test (2011 and 2012) conducted in a semi-arid area (Albacete, Spain) applying four irrigation levels (120, 100, 80 and 60% of irrigation requirements). Subsequently, the model was used for simulating the potato yield under several deficit irrigation strategies (ISs) during 30 years of a semi-arid climate (1988–2017) and determining the most profitable option. The considered ISs were deemed those most suitable from the yield and water productivity point of view by some authors. The model performance for tuber yield was satisfactory with an index of agreement >0.91 and errors between 0.71 and 3.06 × 103 kg/ha. The ISs simulated with SUBSTOR-Potato showed that slight deficit irrigation (5–10%) may increase the water productivity and profitability of the farms. Moreover, tuber formation (from onset of tuber initiation to harvest) was shown to be the most sensitive stage, therefore it is highly recommended to avoid deficit during this stage, which would cause a large reduction in yield (around 8 t/ha, depending on the level of deficit suffered by the crop).
