Modeling the impact of prostate edema on LDR brachytherapy: a Monte Carlo dosimetry study based on a 3D biphasic finite element biomechanical model

Abstract: Prostate volume changes due to edema occurrence during transperineal permanent brachytherapy should be taken under consideration to ensure optimal dose delivery. Available edema models, based on prostate volume observations, face several limitations. Therefore, patient-specific models need to be developed to accurately account for the impact of edema. In this study we present a biomechanical model developed to reproduce edema resolution patterns documented in the literature. Using the biphasic mixture theory a… Show more

“…Limitations of our study include the small sample size, the lack of a control population, and the very small numbers of patients treated at each immunotherapy dose, precluding a final judgement on the optimal dosing of immunotherapy in this setting. Because of regulatory requirements and the limited number of patients we were unable to investigate other radiation dosimetry methods 18 , 19 that may hold promise for decreasing toxicity. The bispecific antibody tenbendafusp has recently been shown in a controlled trial 20 to improve survival in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma who are positive for HLA-A2.…”

“…This will be addressed by introducing within the optimization process a previously developed biomechanical model for edema prediction. 44 Additionally, in future work, we aim to evaluate the proposed methodology in a clinical setting. Therefore, we have developed the inverse planning software TiTAN based on the proposed DVH-FSA algorithm.…”

“…Several GPU-accelerated MC engines, for dosimetric studies, have been proposed by different groups already [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. The GGEMS toolkit [ 20 , 24 ] is a GPU accelerated MC dose engine based on the Geant4 physics models and has been used for dosimetry applications in prostate brachytherapy procedures [ 24 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of GGEMS to provide accurate dosimetric data in a brachytherapy scenario using the Amersham, Oncoseed, 6711 type.…”
