Modeling the Boundaries of Plant Ecotones of Mountain Ecosystems

Abstract: Abstract:The ecological second-order phase transition model has been used to describe height-dependent changes in the species composition of mountain forest ecosystems. Forest inventory data on the distribution of various tree species in the Sayan Mountains (south Middle Siberia) are in good agreement with the model proposed in this study. The model was used to estimate critical heights for different altitudinal belts of vegetation, determine the boundaries and extents of ecotones between different vegetation … Show more

“…The variation of λ will simply modify or eventually destroy ecotones. The corresponding transition, as λ varies, appears to be akin to continuous phase transitions [63]. Again, qualitatively, this is what we observe from the CA lattices' time evolution considering distinct values of I (see Figures 4 and 11).…”

“…It is important to mention that actual ecotones have been associated with phase transitions [61,62], in fact to second-order ones, i.e., to critical phenomena [63]. Thus, in spite of the great simplicity of our CA model, it readily reproduces two of the most important aspects of ecotones:…”

“…The ecological function and services of wetlands are essential for the sustainable development of lives (Gurung et al, 2009). Ecotones are transition areas between different natural systems (ecosystems, landscapes), between natural and anthropogenic systems, between different media (water-land), and between biomes (Ivanova and Soukhovolsky, 2016). The ecological environment of land-lake ecotone is complex and changeable.…”

“…Floral assessment is an important criterion for the assessment of life forms and habitat for an area (Klosowski, 1993). Riparian vegetation is a typical element of the lake district landscapes (Ivanova and Soukhovolsky, 2016). In the world, wetlands and their associated species are under pressure of decline and system degradation.…”
