Modeling Temporary Plugging Agent Transport in the Wellbore and Fracture with a Coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics–Discrete Element Method Approach

Abstract: As the consumption of oil and gas resources is increasing, secondary exploitation in old wells and unconventional oil and gas exploitation methods are becoming increasingly important. As a result of complex reservoir environments and the reservoir properties, such as ultralow porosity and permeability, hydraulic fracturing is an important means to achieve effective recovery. Temporary plugging fracturing is currently an efficient fracturing technology and is suitable for refracturing of old wells and multi-sta… Show more

“…Pump speed, pump pressure, the formula of bridging and plugging materials, and the viscosity of drilling fluid or particular plugging slurry will all affect the quality of the plugging layer. Poor quality plugging layer is the main reason for the failure of plugging [7][8][9][10].…”

“…10 Granular TPA has been widely used because of its advantages such as safe construction, easy regulation of particle size, and convenient operation and transportation. 11 After TPA particles of different sizes are injected into the fracture, the larger particles will first form bridges in the fracture. Then, the smaller particles are further filled into the holes between the large particle TPA to form a plugging zone.…”

“…At present, most of the temporary plugging fracturing experiments are carried out in rock, and the results show that the TPA can plug the major fracture to increase the fracture complexity . Granular TPA has been widely used because of its advantages such as safe construction, easy regulation of particle size, and convenient operation and transportation . After TPA particles of different sizes are injected into the fracture, the larger particles will first form bridges in the fracture.…”

“…For example, in the fracturing process of unconventional petroleum reservoirs, to further increase the stimulated reservoir volume, TPAs can be injected after fracturing. 4,6 It can produce high-strength plugging of the original fractures so that the refracturing work can be successfully completed, thereby increasing a single well's production. 7,8 It can make fracturing construction less complicated, and the number of segmented tools improve stimulation efficiency and effectively reduce fracturing costs.…”
