In this paper, we propose a behavioural approach to determine the extent to which the consumer/citizen distinction aects interpretations of monetary values. We perform a eld experiment dealing with air pollution, where some (randomly selected) subjects are given the opportunity to behave politically by signing a petition for environmental protection prior to stating their private preferences in a standard contingent valuation exercise. We show that the petition has the potential to inuence respondents' willingness to pay and that whether the eect is negative or positive depends on the degree of (dis)similarity between the petition and the scenario in which willingness to pay are elicited. We interpret the results using the theory of commitment borrowed from social psychology.

We report the results from a questionnaire-type experiment designed to elicit whether individuals decide in accordance with the equity axiom constituent for Rawls's second principle. The experiment is sequential in nature. Hence it generates panel data. We use recently developed panel data methods for studying the role that state dependence and unobservable individual-specific effects play for the observed equity judgements. The results indicate that a dominant share of our probants initially adhere to Hammond's equity axiom, but that many of these leave the Rawlsian position at later stages of the experiment. Although state dependence plays a significant role it cannot alone explain the observed decision behavior. Individual-specific effects are also important.

AbstractThis study was carried out under de Master in Management and aimed to verify the existence of an anchoring effect in the determination of an economic incentive for recycling, using for this purpose three different questionnaires, which sought to obtain from people inquired, the values that they would need to receive to always do recycling in their daily lives.Considering the current discussion in Portugal about the need to implement economic instruments to improve waste management performance (Assembleia da República, 2013), the correct setting of the incentive value assumes a particular importance.This study examined the impact of using a high and a low anchor for three distinct types of materials: plastic, glass and paper. These anchors were calculated based on responses to a first survey called the calibration group.In the high anchor situation, the value that people needed to receive to always recycling got an anchor index to the material glass, which stood out when compared with the same index in relation to plastic and paper.In what concerns the lower anchor, the results were much more striking. Highlighted, it was also the material glass, although the results related to the other materials, plastic and paper, have also been very clear....
