Modeling Reservoir Geometry With Irregular Grids

Abstract: This paper describes a practical method in which irregular or locally irregular grids are used in reservoir simulation with the advantages of flexible approximation of reservoir geometry and reduced grid-orientation effects. Finite-difference equations are derived from an integral formulation of the reservoir model equations equivalent to the commonly used differential equations. Integrating over gridblocks results in material-balance equations for each block. This leads to a finite-volume method that combines… Show more

“…UST numerical well test software is based on PEBI gridding (Li et al 2014;Zha et al 2008;Heinemann et al 1991;Mahani and Evazi 2010). The software is used to generate the numerical simulation to study effect of water phase saturation on the formation of thief zone in the mature reservoir.…”

“…However, it is well known that finite-difference methods work best if the underlying grid is orthogonal, and numerical errors can be significant if the grid is deformed to match complex reservoir structures (e.g. Heinemann et al 1991;Aziz 1993;Aavatsmark 2002;Lie et al 2012). In addition to solving the ADRE, specific constitutive relationships are needed to model the physico-chemical problem of interest.…”

“…PEBI grids are also commonly referred to as 'unstructured grids' but it should be pointed out that PEBI grids provide geometric flexibility mainly in areal dimensions. PEBI grids were first applied in the context of reservoir simulation originally over two decades ago (Heinemann et al 1991), and are now used regularly in some proprietary industry simulators (e.g. Liu et al 2007a, b;Dogru et al 2009;Verma et al 2009) and research simulators (e.g.…”

“…For the past two decades, significant effort has been made on the development of unstructured grid algorithms, such as the perpendicular bisector grid proposed by Heinemann (1991). There still exist some technical difficulties with unstructured grids in real field applications and no major commercial simulators currently support unstructured grids.…”
