Modeling Power Constraints Using Maps and Field Data in Optimization Problems for Gas Transportation Systems

Abstract: Gas transmission networks have been and continue to be the most efficient method for transporting natural gas. As Hydrogen begins to emerge as one possible solution of renewable energy and starts mixing into gas networks, now more than ever, efficient operation is paramount. Part of the efficient pipeline operation puzzle is knowing how much power is available at a given compressor station, which constrains the head and flow that can be produced. This paper derives and implements driver constraints relating to… Show more

“…The decision variables of the model considered the pipeline flow rate, the number of compressors started, and outlet pressure, but the compressor model was relatively simplified. Allen did very interesting work in which he broke through the traditional compressor constraints and derived the driver constraints related to the natural gas pipeline optimization problem. In general, transient research is generally carried out in the short term and more detailed scheduling method of compressors in the station. The steady-state calculation method is often used for the optimization of compressor stations in the whole pipeline system. Different from previous studies, this paper may have different operation modes in different stations due to flow distribution between parallel pipelines, such as the independent or joint operation of compressor stations, which increases the difficulty of pipeline modeling.…”
