Modeling phenotypes of malignant gliomas

Abstract: Malignant gliomas are primary tumors of the central nervous system characterized by diffuse infiltration into the brain and a high recurrence rate. Advances in comprehensive genomic studies have provided unprecedented insight into the genetic and molecular heterogeneity of these tumors and refined our understanding of their evolution from low to high grade. However, similar levels of phenotypic characterization are indispensable to understanding the complexity of malignant gliomas. Experimental glioma models h… Show more

“…In the present study, the effects of lidocaine on the rat glioma C6 cell line were investigated. Malignant gliomas are primary brain tumors characterized by rapid and invasive growth (35). The standard treatment is based on radical brain tumor surgery, maximally safe radiation and concomitant chemotherapy (36-38).…”

“…Brain tumors arise from a wide variety of cell types, which give rise to tumors with different degrees of malignancy and invasiveness, and can afflict both adults and children [1,2]. Despite the low incidence of these tumors, they are a leading cause of cancer-associated mortality and morbidity, particularly in young adults and children, where they account for about 20 and 30% of cancer deaths, respectively.…”

“…Glioma is one of the most common primary tumors in brain and it accounts for the majority of central nervous system oncology cases in adults globally in 2016 ( 1 ). In general, glioma infiltrates into the brain and affects the cerebral hemispheres of patients ( 1 ).…”

“…Glioma is one of the most common primary tumors in brain and it accounts for the majority of central nervous system oncology cases in adults globally in 2016 ( 1 ). In general, glioma infiltrates into the brain and affects the cerebral hemispheres of patients ( 1 ). Though aggressive therapies including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy have been developed and applied widely, glioma remains associated with high recurrence rates and there are no efficient treatment options ( 2 ).…”
