Modeling of spilling and extinguishing of burning fuel on horizontal surface

Abstract: Purpose. To construct a model of extinguishing a spill fire spreading on a nonsmooth horizontal surface using water mist. Methodology. A force balance equation for the forces influencing the spilled liquid spread has been worked out. The equation takes into account the change in the mass of the spilled liquid due to its burnout and possible inflow in the case of a continuous spill. Filling of the surface irregularities in the spill area has also been taken into account. There has been worked out a thermal bala… Show more

“…The proposed method could be used to take into consideration the impregnation in the model of liquid spreading on the ground [15] and the combustion model of the spill of combustible liquid [19]. Taking into consideration the impregnation of liquid into the soil during its spreading and combustion makes it possible to refine the thermal effect of fire on steel and concrete structures [20].…”

“…One of the common methods for modeling the spread of liquid over a horizontal surface is the use of the principle of gravitational spreading of a cylindrical layer of liquid [15]. The analysis of models of liquid spreading on a solid surface is reported in [16].…”

“…The obtained differential equation contains the coefficient of kinematic viscosity, which significantly depends on the temperature of the air flow. The flow temperature is non-linearly rela ted to its velocity (14). Such a dependence makes it impossible to analytically solve the differential equation (10).…”

“…In [13], a combustion model for a multicomponent hydrocarbon mixture was constructed, but the heat flux from the flame is not considered in it. In [14], a model was constructed for the spreading and combustion of a combustible liquid on a horizontal surface. In [15], the thermal effect of a fire on steel structures was considered, but the dynamics of changes in the parameters of the combustion source was left without attention.…”
